Why Are Opposition Leaders Protesting Outside the Bihar Legislative Council?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 6 (NationPress) A significant commotion erupted outside the Bihar Legislative Council on Friday as Opposition leaders, spearheaded by former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, orchestrated a vigorous protest concerning farmers’ issues and chanted slogans against the state administration.
The atmosphere around the Council premises was charged with tension throughout the demonstration.
The Opposition accused the Bihar government of neglecting farmers' welfare, asserting that the government is merely making announcements under the agricultural road map, with no real benefits for farmers on the ground.
Demanding immediate relief and accountability, the Opposition leaders rallied outside the Assembly complex.
In a media briefing, Rabri Devi launched a scathing critique of the Nitish Kumar government, claiming it came to power through unjust means despite lacking public support.
She asserted that the Opposition had received a majority mandate, while the government was formed through electoral fraud.
“We won the election. They formed the government through deceit. We garnered about 1.9 crore votes— what did they achieve? Not even half that,” Rabri Devi claimed.
She drew comparisons with political happenings in other states, alleging that legislators in Maharashtra and Haryana were reportedly purchased for Rs 50–60 crore.
She claimed that similar dishonest tactics were employed to establish the government in Bihar, emphasizing that the public is fully aware of the situation.
“The people are observing everything. The populace of Bihar understands how this government came to be,” she stated, promising that the Opposition would persist in its struggle for farmers’ rights and would not let the government evade accountability.
Rabri Devi’s statements further heightened the political tension in the state, with the ruling coalition and the Opposition engaged in a fierce conflict over governance, farmers’ welfare, and the legitimacy of the upcoming 2025 Assembly elections.
In the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, RJD secured only 25 seats, a dramatic decline from the 75 seats won in the 2020 elections.
