Is the Opposition's Protest Outside the Bihar Legislative Council a Call to Action Against Rising Crime?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 19 (NationPress) The opposition, spearheaded by Leader of the Opposition Rabri Devi, caused a significant stir outside the Bihar Legislative Council on Thursday, accusing the state government of failing to uphold law and order amidst a concerning increase in criminal activities such as murder, rape, and molestation.
In her address to the media, Rabri Devi expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Bihar, claiming that incidents of serious crime were on the rise while the government celebrated its own inaction.
She emphasized that the opposition would persist in its activism on these critical issues, both in the streets and within the legislative assembly.
Furthermore, she accused the government of attempting to stifle the opposition's voice, warning that such efforts would not prevail.
“Daughters of Bihar are facing open threats, yet they will not be silenced and will continue to advocate against injustices,” she asserted.
During the demonstration, Rabri Devi highlighted a tragic incident related to the matriculation examination, where a student reportedly took their own life after being denied entry for arriving a few minutes late.
Describing the incident as profoundly tragic, she demanded accountability from those responsible and questioned the strict policy that bars students from taking exams even if they arrive as little as two to five minutes late.
Meanwhile, tensions also rose inside the Council regarding the subject of liquor prohibition.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC Sunil Kumar made severe allegations against the government, asserting that despite the prohibition, alcohol is readily available throughout the state.
He claimed that several ministers and MLAs from the ruling party regularly consume alcohol and suggested that liquor bottles are even opened within the Bihar Legislative Assembly premises, though he refrained from naming specific individuals.
Sunil Kumar further accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of establishing a parallel liquor economy worth nearly Rs 25,000 crore through the prohibition policy.
He claimed that Bihar’s circumstances over the last decade have deteriorated to the point of resembling “Udta Punjab,” highlighting widespread substance abuse, including rising instances of drug addiction among children.
Sunil Kumar criticized the government for ignoring this escalating crisis, despite the social ramifications of addiction and the apparent failure of law enforcement to address it.
