Bhopal, Feb 19 (NationPress) A staggering 32,385 individuals from various age demographics have taken their lives by suicide across Madhya Pradesh within a mere two-year timeframe, as disclosed by the state government in a formal reply during the fourth day of the budget session of the state Assembly on Thursday.

The data released by the state authorities revealed a shocking trend, indicating that the highest number of suicide cases involved youths, particularly students, who represent a significant portion of those who chose to take this tragic step.

From December 13, 2023, to January 20, 2026, 987 students have died by suicide in the state since the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government assumed power.

Following students, those employed in the agriculture sector appear to be in a particularly vulnerable situation, with a total of 667 agricultural workers and 562 registered farmers having taken their lives during the same timeframe.

This alarming statistic indicates that out of all suicide cases, 1,229 individuals were directly or indirectly linked to agriculture, raising concerns as nearly 70 percent of Madhya Pradesh's population depends on these sectors.

In response to a query from Congress MLA Rajan Mandloi of Barwani Assembly, the state government stated that only two farmers have reportedly died by suicide due to crop damage in the past two years under the current BJP administration.

Rajan Mandloi, a first-time Congress MLA from the tribal community, also inquired whether the state government extended any financial aid to the families of the farmers, agricultural workers, and students who died by suicide. The state government responded by stating that there have been zero reported deaths related to suicide.

The budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly commenced on February 16 and is set to conclude on March 6.

During the fourth day of Assembly proceedings, Congress legislators raised disruptions, pushing for a formal discussion regarding the drinking water contamination crisis in Indore's Bhagirathpura, which has tragically led to multiple fatalities.

As the House session began, Leader of Opposition and seasoned Congress leader Umang Singhar asserted that the party demanded a discussion on the water contamination incident.

However, Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar denied permission for the discussion, citing that the matter is currently sub-judice and that discussing it could constitute contempt of court.

In response, opposition Congress members voiced their protest, accusing the BJP government of shielding government officials and public representatives.

The Congress party reiterated its demand for the resignation of State Urban Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.

State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Prahlad Singh Patel backed the Speaker's ruling, suggesting that instead of a debate in the Assembly, the issue could be addressed in a separate meeting with the relevant state minister.

Point of View

I recognize the profound implications of these statistics on society. The alarming rate of suicides, especially among youths and agricultural workers, calls for urgent action and support systems. It is crucial that we prioritize mental health resources and comprehensive policies to prevent these tragedies, aligning with the nation’s responsibility to safeguard its citizens.
