Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, stated that the campaigning for the bye-elections in Bagalkot and Davanagere South has proceeded without incident thus far, praising all political factions for upholding a respectful atmosphere.
While addressing the media in Davanagere on Tuesday, he remarked that government officials have provided comprehensive support to facilitate a smooth electoral process.
He mentioned that both he and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were actively involved in the nomination process for party candidates in both regions, demonstrating their endorsement.
Shivakumar highlighted that the Congress party adhered to its longstanding practice of consulting all relevant parties prior to selecting new candidates.
He pointed out that there were initial attempts by certain individuals and media outlets in Davanagere South to sow discord, but many leaders eventually withdrew, thereby fortifying the party.
He expressed his appreciation for the leaders who rallied behind the party.
Focusing on development initiatives, Shivakumar emphasized that the constituency has experienced superior infrastructure advancements compared to Bengaluru, particularly regarding concrete roads, parks, and lake cleanliness.
He paid tribute to the late senior leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa for his significant contributions, noting that even at the age of 95, he worked for the benefit of all community segments and played a pivotal role in the area's advancement.
He also recognized the contributions made by Mallikarjun.
Referencing findings from an internal survey, Shivakumar asserted that over 70% of voters in the constituency favor the Congress candidate.
The survey included responses from more than one lakh individuals.
According to him, Shivashankarappa's family has consistently invested in the constituency in sectors such as health, education, religion, and social welfare, including the distribution of free vaccines during the COVID crisis.
He added that feedback from local traders and minority communities points to a peaceful environment under Shivashankarappa’s guidance, with no significant incidents or exploitation reported.
He regarded this as a strong asset for the party and stressed the necessity for youth and the new generation to contribute innovative ideas for further progress.
Shivakumar also mentioned that party leaders collectively decided to endorse a young, educated, and capable candidate.
He noted that although the candidate’s mother, Prabha Mallikarjun, was initially hesitant to run, she was convinced by the party and ultimately succeeded, currently performing well in Parliament.
He stated that Shivashankarappa also established free community halls for the underprivileged, emphasizing that being remembered as a generous benefactor by the community is a rare honor.
He expressed optimism that the party's candidate would carry on this legacy.
