Bhubaneswar, July 27 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday brought national attention to the environmental awareness campaign targeting forest fires, initiated by the ‘Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali’, a collective of devotional singers hailing from Odisha’s Keonjhar district. This group is effectively disseminating messages about conservation through their traditional songs and melodies.
During his 124th episode of the monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, the Prime Minister underscored the innovative approach of this group.
“The essence of India's diversity is embodied in our folk songs and traditions, including our bhajans and kirtans. But have you ever encountered a situation where kirtans are used to educate people about forest fires? It may sound unbelievable, yet remarkable efforts are underway in Keonjhar district of Odisha. Here, a group named Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali is making a difference,” PM Modi emphasized.
He further commended the efforts of Pramila Pradhan, the leader of this initiative, who is at the forefront of the campaign against forest fires in her region.
“In conjunction with their devotion, this group is now championing the cause of environmental protection. The inspiration behind this initiative is Pramila Pradhan. To safeguard our forests and environment, she has infused traditional songs with new lyrics and messages. Her troupe has traveled from village to village, educating the community through music about the devastating effects of forest fires,” he mentioned.
The story of Pradhan and the Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali serves as a reminder that our folk traditions remain relevant and possess the power to influence society positively.
In his Mann Ki Baat address, PM Modi also touched upon 'National Handloom Day', celebrated annually on August 7 to honor the Swadeshi Movement that began on August 7, 1905. He noted that this year, August 7 will mark a decade of 'National Handloom Day'.
Highlighting various initiatives by individuals across the nation to revive traditional handlooms, PM Modi praised the contributions of tribal women in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha in reinstating the traditional Santhali saree.
“A similar success story exists in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Here, over 650 tribal women have brought back the Santhali saree. These women are now earning significant incomes each month and crafting their own identities through their work. The story of Naveen Kumar from Nalanda, Bihar, is equally inspiring, as his family has been involved in this craft for generations,” Modi added.
