New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Indian contingent for their remarkable medal achievement at the World Para-Athletics Championships, which took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from September 23 to October 5. He stated that their success will motivate many.
This year, India made history by securing a total of 22 medals, a record number that includes six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze, marking their best performance ever. In earlier championships, India had garnered nine medals in Dubai 2019, ten in Paris 2023, and 17 in Kobe 2024.
“This is a historic achievement by our para-athletes! The World Para-Athletics Championships this year have been incredibly special. The Indian contingent's performance has been unparalleled, with a total of 22 medals won, including six gold medals,” PM Modi shared on X.
“Congratulations to our athletes! Their success will inspire many. I am immensely proud of each member of our contingent and wish them all the best for their future endeavors,” he added.
By successfully hosting the World Para Athletics Championships in 2025, India has stepped into a league typically dominated by elite and established organizers. The renowned Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium witnessed the participation of over 2,200 athletes from more than 100 countries competing across 186 medal events.
“Hosting this tournament in Delhi has been a profound honor for India. I express my gratitude to the athletes and support staff from nearly 100 nations who participated in this tournament,” the post further elaborated.
The evident improvement in the performance of Indian para-athletes is a testament to the government’s unwavering support. At WPAC 2025, 15 athletes under the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme and one from the Khelo India programme made it to the medal tally. A total of 23 TOPS group athletes and 22 Khelo India athletes participated in WPAC 2025.
