Did PM Modi's Visit to Cyprus Mark a New Era?

Nicosia, June 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his significant two-day trip to Cyprus on Monday before heading to Canada to participate in the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, set for Tuesday.

This visit, occurring on June 15-16, marks the first time in over twenty years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Cyprus, significantly enhancing New Delhi's ties with Nicosia, a vital ally in the Mediterranean and the European Union.

"This groundbreaking visit highlights the lasting friendship and trusted partnership between our nations," remarked Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as PM Modi concluded his time in Nicosia. He emphasized the strategic trajectory of the India-Cyprus relationship, which is also pivotal within the broader framework of the India-EU strategic partnership and India’s increasing involvement in the Mediterranean.

On Monday, the two nations signed several agreements, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening India’s presence in the Mediterranean and the EU.

Previously, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides honored PM Modi with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

This award represents the 23rd international accolade that PM Modi has received from abroad, highlighting his exceptional global influence. Analysts suggest that no Indian Prime Minister has achieved such a significant impact as a statesman on the world stage.

Upon his arrival at the palace, PM Modi was greeted by President Christodoulides as a military band performed tributes. The national anthems were played, and the Indian Prime Minister laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III. A subsequent private meeting between the two leaders ensued.

President Christodoulides expressed, "It is a tremendous pleasure and honor to host you on this historic visit, 23 years since the last Indian Prime Minister's visit to Cyprus. Your presence signals a clear willingness to fortify our bilateral relations across various sectors, including economy, trade, defense, technology, tourism, and connectivity. The enthusiasm displayed by both Indian and Cypriot business communities at the forum yesterday is a testament to this interest."

The Joint Declaration adopted later illustrated a new chapter in the bilateral relations between India and Cyprus, extending to a broader European and global context.

"Cyprus serves as a reliable ally for India in the strategically important Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East. Additionally, being a Member State of the EU, Cyprus acts as India's entry point to Europe. With Cyprus set to assume the EU Council Presidency on January 1, 2026, we are committed to further enhancing India's strategic partnerships with the EU," stated Christodoulides.

He also expressed gratitude for India's longstanding position on the Cyprus issue, seeking to end Turkish occupation and reunite the homeland. He voiced Cyprus's support for India's efforts against international and cross-border terrorism.
