Harsil, March 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stressed the importance of year-round tourism in Uttarakhand to bolster the state’s economy, declaring that “no season should be off-season” for the area.
Speaking to a large audience in Harsil, the Prime Minister expressed his sympathies to the families affected by the recent tragic event in Mana.
“In this challenging time, the unity and support from our people have provided tremendous strength to the bereaved families,” he stated.
Commending Uttarakhand’s spiritual importance, he shared his gratitude for visiting the winter sanctuary of Goddess Ganga. “This land of Devbhoomi is brimming with spiritual energy. Visiting these sacred spots and interacting with all of you fills me with immense joy,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his strong ties with the state, PM Modi noted, “Thanks to Maa Ganga’s blessings, I had the chance to serve Uttarakhand. I feel her blessings led me to Kashi, where I currently serve as a parliamentarian. I’ve always sensed that Maa Ganga has embraced me, and today, I am privileged to visit her maternal home, Mukhwa.”
The Prime Minister fondly recalled his connection with the people of Uttarakhand, particularly the women who graciously send him local produce.
“I cherish my 'didi-bhulis' (sisters) from this region. They continually send me the renowned red grams of Harsil and other local goods. I am genuinely thankful for your affection,” he added.
Reflecting on his prior visit to Kedarnath, he reaffirmed his vision for the state. “I had stated that this decade belongs to Uttarakhand. Though those words were mine, I feel it was Baba Kedar who empowered me to articulate them. And today, with his blessings, those words are materializing,” he said.
PM Modi underscored the importance of winter tourism in achieving economic development for the state.
“Tourism in Uttarakhand has been seasonal, peaking from March to June. However, visitor numbers decline after that, causing economic difficulties. It is essential to ensure that no season is an off-season. Tourism should remain vibrant throughout the year,” he asserted.
Highlighting the state's potential, he emphasized that winter is a unique time to experience “Devboomi” Uttarakhand's true character.
“Winter tourism offers exciting activities such as trekking and skiing, which provide thrilling experiences. Many pilgrimage sites also hold special rituals during this season. Even in the villages, one can witness religious ceremonies deeply rooted in our ancient traditions,” he said.
“While much of the country experiences fog during winter, these mountains enjoy bright sunlight. This can be a unique experience, and in Gharwali, we can say 'Gham taapo pariyatan' (sun-bathe tourism),” he added.
He praised the Uttarakhand government's vision for 365-day tourism, stating that it will provide visitors with diverse and enriching experiences.
“Our double-engine government is dedicated to transforming Uttarakhand into a developed state. From the Char Dham All-Weather Road to modern expressways, railway expansion, air travel, and helicopter services, Uttarakhand has witnessed rapid progress over the past decade,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the Kedarnath and Hemkund ropeway projects, which will greatly aid the elderly, women, and children, making religious travel more accessible.
Concluding his address, PM Modi highlighted the increase in tourism in Uttarakhand, particularly the unprecedented number of pilgrims visiting the Char Dham this year.
“This growing influx of visitors underlines Uttarakhand's rising status as a premier spiritual and adventure tourism destination,” he stated.
