Conrad Sangma is the progeny of the late former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and distinguished leader P. A. Sangma. He became politically active after completing his education, holding a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He later pursued an MBA in Finance from Imperial College London.
His political journey began with the 2004 Meghalaya Assembly elections, where he faced a narrow defeat by just 182 votes. In the 2008 elections, he secured a seat in the Assembly alongside his brother. Following his father's passing in March 2016, Conrad Sangma was elected president of the National People’s Party (NPP) and subsequently won a seat in the 16th Lok Sabha from the Tura constituency.
He has also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the eighth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and represented the NPP from the Selsella constituency in the West Garo Hills district. In 2008, he became the youngest Finance Minister of Meghalaya and has previously served as the National President of the Nationalist Youth Congress.
