In a heartfelt statement, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) mentioned that an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will be allocated to the families of each deceased victim. Furthermore, those injured will receive Rs 50,000 each to aid in their medical care and recovery.

"The Prime Minister is profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of lives in this unfortunate incident at Karur. He has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who perished and Rs 50,000 for the injured," the PMO conveyed in a statement.

The calamity struck on Saturday evening at Velusamypuram in Karur district during a significant campaign rally led by actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay.

Thousands of supporters flocked from various regions to hear him speak, resulting in severe congestion in the narrow pathways near the venue.

As the rally concluded and attendees began to disperse, a sudden surge and ensuing chaos resulted in a devastating crush.

According to Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police (DGP) G. Venkataraman, 39 individuals were confirmed dead, including nine children, while over 80 people were injured and transported to different hospitals.

Officials reported that many attendees had been waiting for hours under the scorching sun without sufficient food or water, following social media rumors indicating that Vijay would arrive earlier than scheduled, although the event commenced much later in the evening. Following the tragedy, Vijay expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.

Labeling the incident as an "irreparable loss", he declared a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each affected family and Rs 2 lakh for those injured.

"Words fail to console those mourning their loved ones. I stand with them in this difficult time," he stated.
