New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) The PM-SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs) initiative is set to transform 1,000 government ITIs nationwide using a hub-and-spoke model. This involves 200 central hub ITIs that will receive support for cutting-edge infrastructure and modern training amenities, while 800 spoke ITIs will broaden training access across various districts, as revealed on Saturday.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is collaborating with the Maharashtra government to conduct a significant industry consultation in Pune, marking the initiation of the PM-SETU.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled this initiative as part of the Viksit Bharat vision, targeting the establishment of a future-ready, globally competitive workforce by January 19, 2026.
This event aims to engage industry stakeholders and enhance awareness regarding the scheme’s framework led by industry participation.
As per the MSDE, over 50 eligible companies from sectors like construction, textiles, automotive, FMCG, electronics, oil and gas, and renewable energy are expected to take part.
The initiative repositions ITIs as government-owned but industry-managed entities, fostering demand-driven training, apprenticeships, and enhanced placement connections through cluster-based collaborations with key industry players.

During the consultation, MoUs will be signed to formalise partnerships between industry and educational institutions aimed at enhancing vocational training and improving employability in the state.
The MoUs will cover collaborations between the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET), Government of Maharashtra, and companies like FIAT India, Schneider Electric India, and the Anudip Foundation, along with agreements between DVET and SDN/Wadhwani.
According to the official statement, through this cluster model, industry partners will be able to directly influence institutional governance, align training with current labour market demands, support curriculum and pedagogy enhancements, facilitate faculty upskilling, and bolster apprenticeship and placement pipelines.
