Eruvaka Purnima 2025: Telangana minister Ponnam Prabhakar sows seeds to launch kharif season
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Monday ploughed a field and sowed seeds at Kurella village in Koheda Mandal, Husnabad constituency, Siddipet district, formally inaugurating the state's kharif agricultural season on the occasion of Eruvaka Purnima. The festival, rooted in Telangana's agrarian tradition, marks the auspicious start of new farming activities with prayers to Mother Earth for bountiful harvests.
The Ceremony at Kurella Village
Minister Prabhakar, who holds the portfolios of Transport and Backward Classes Welfare, joined local farmers in the symbolic act of sowing, lending official weight to the seasonal ritual. Agricultural Market Committee chairpersons, sarpanches from surrounding villages, agriculture department officials, public representatives, and a large gathering of farmers participated in the programme.
Prabhakar extended Eruvaka Pournami greetings to the farming community and prayed for abundant rainfall across Telangana, expressing hope that farmers would secure good health, prosperity, and bountiful yields this season.
What the Minister Said
Describing Eruvaka Purnima as 'a symbol of Telangana's farming culture,' Prabhakar called it a sacred occasion on which farmers pay obeisance to Mother Earth before commencing fresh agricultural activities. He stated that 'the farmer who produces rice is the backbone of the nation,' and emphasised that the state will prosper only when its farmers are content.
The minister highlighted that the Congress government in Telangana is according the highest priority to farmers' welfare, backing that claim with a list of ongoing interventions: improving irrigation infrastructure, supplying quality seeds and fertilisers, and strengthening agricultural support systems.
Advice to Farmers This Kharif Season
Prabhakar urged farmers to adopt scientific cultivation methods and seek guidance from agriculture department officials rather than rely on unverified inputs. He specifically advised judicious use of water to support nature-friendly farming and called for careful crop selection in light of shifting climate patterns.
The minister also encouraged farmers to embrace modern agricultural technology to maximise yields, and prayed that all crops grow free of pest and insect attacks, enabling farmers to earn strong economic returns this season.
Government's Commitment to Agriculture
Reiterating the state government's position, Prabhakar said farmers' welfare is a core policy goal and that the administration remains 'continuously committed to the development of the agriculture sector.' He assured the farming community that the government will stand by them at every stage — from sowing to sale — and called on farmers to move forward with confidence into the new kharif cycle.
With the kharif season now officially under way in Siddipet district, all eyes will be on monsoon performance across Telangana in the weeks ahead.
