Dharmendra Pradhan orders framework to fix academic, infra gaps in NITs
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, announced that the government will develop a comprehensive framework to address academic and infrastructural deficiencies across higher education institutions (HEIs), with a specific focus on student well-being and institutional ambience. The announcement followed a high-level review meeting centred on NIT Kurukshetra and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur in West Bengal.
Key Decisions from the Review Meeting
Chairing the meeting, Pradhan issued a set of student-centric directives, including the immediate improvement of hostel facilities, provision of adequate sports infrastructure, and a structured faculty upgradation programme. The focus, according to the Ministry, is on enriching campus life through student mentoring and constructive engagement mechanisms.
The meeting also decided to constitute a dedicated committee comprising directors of HEIs, noted alumni, faculty members, and students. This body will be tasked with suggesting and monitoring measures aimed at building a vibrant, student-centric campus environment.
What the Ministry Has Directed
The Ministry of Education, in an official statement, said that concerted efforts will be made to promote a sports culture and to review and revamp academic blocks, laboratories, libraries, hostels, messes, and recreational clubs on a priority basis. Pradhan stressed the need to identify specific themes for intervention, including student engagement, faculty orientation, alumni involvement, academic support, innovation culture, hostel governance, and overall campus management.
The need to standardise faculty recruitment, ensure sensitive and proactive faculty representation in the Board of Governors (BoG), and appoint individuals with adequate time and commitment as Chairperson of the BoG was also discussed at length.
High-Level Committee Already Constituted for NIT Kurukshetra
With regard to the broader administrative and academic concerns at NIT Kurukshetra, the Ministry had on 29 March 2025 constituted a high-level committee under the provisions of the NITSER Act, 2007, to review governance, work progress, and overall institutional functioning.
The committee comprises Anil Sahasrabudhe (Chairman, NETF and Former Chairman, AICTE), M. Madan Gopal, IAS (Retd.) (Chairperson, BoG, VNIT Nagpur), and K.K. Shukla (Director, MANIT Bhopal). It has been tasked with assessing academic and administrative performance, recruitment and grievance-related issues, and institutional indicators including NIRF rankings. The committee is reportedly expected to submit its report shortly.
Who Attended and What Was Observed
Tuesday's meeting was attended by the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, NIT Kurukshetra, the Secretary (Higher Education), and other senior officials of the Ministry. The review covered the academic environment, campus life, and hostel management at both institutes.
It was observed during the meeting that urgent steps are required to enhance campus vibrancy and strengthen systems for constructive student engagement — an acknowledgement that existing mechanisms have fallen short.
With the high-level committee's report expected imminently, the government's next steps on NIT Kurukshetra's governance overhaul will be closely watched by students, faculty, and the broader higher education sector.
