Jaipur, Feb 27 (NationPress) On Friday, President Droupadi Murmu became the first President of India to co-pilot the indigenously manufactured HAL Light Combat Helicopter Prachanda during a sortie from the Jaisalmer Air Force Station. This significant event marks a milestone in her association with advanced military technology.

The President embarked on a 25-minute flight, accompanied by Group Captain N.S. Bahua, where she had the opportunity to survey the border regions and the Pokhran Field Firing Range. While in the cockpit, she saluted and gave a thumbs-up, even addressing the nation via radio from the helicopter. A HAL Chetak helicopter provided escort throughout the mission, returning safely to the Air Force Station.

Arriving at the air base at around 9:15 a.m., President Murmu was briefed by Army officials about the helicopter's capabilities before boarding at approximately 10:15 a.m. During her flight, she familiarized herself with the operational systems of the helicopter. This event is a continuation of her pioneering efforts in experiencing frontline military platforms.

Previously, she had made history as the first President to fly in advanced fighter jets, including the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and the Dassault Rafale. This sortie occurs just before the Indian Air Force’s significant military exercise, Vayu Shakti 2026, planned for later that evening at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, close to the India-Pakistan border.

As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the President is set to observe the exercise, which will highlight the Air Force's combat capabilities, including precision strikes and coordinated air operations. The Prachanda helicopter was introduced to the Indian Air Force fleet three years ago during Navratri celebrations in Rajasthan.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh previously referred to it as “India’s victory chariot,” emphasizing its combat prowess despite its classification as a light combat helicopter.

In the evening, President Murmu will attend the Vayu Shakti exercise at Pokhran, where notable attendees will include Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and senior military officials.
