New Delhi, Nov 8 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a significant six-day State visit to Angola and Botswana, set from November 8 to 13, marking a historic occasion as the first visit by an Indian head of state to these nations.
In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “Affirming India’s dedication to Africa and the Global South, President Droupadi Murmu has begun her State visit to Angola and Botswana. This trip represents the inaugural State visit by an Indian President to both countries.”
Throughout her visit, President Murmu is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with her counterparts, deliver speeches in the parliaments of both nations, partake in significant national events, and connect with the Indian diaspora in Luanda and Gaborone.
During a special briefing, MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela mentioned, “The Honourable President will be visiting Angola and Botswana from November 8 to 13. This marks the first State visit by an Indian head of state to these nations.”
He emphasized that India’s involvement with Africa is expanding across critical sectors, including politics, trade, economics, development partnerships, and relations between the people.
Dalela pointed out that India's Africa policy is shaped by the 10 principles articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, with the India-Africa Forum Summit serving as a comprehensive collaboration framework.
“It’s important to note that India’s diplomatic presence has significantly grown in recent years, with 17 new missions established in Africa,” he noted, adding that during India’s G20 Presidency, the African Union was granted permanent membership in the group.
President Murmu is set to visit Angola from November 8 to 11 at the invitation of President Joao Lourenco, who previously visited India in May and invited her to Angola’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.
Dalela stated, “Additionally, India and Angola are commemorating the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year. The President of Angola currently chairs the African Union, making this visit exceptionally significant.”
During her stay, President Murmu will conduct bilateral talks, deliver a speech in the Angolan Parliament, and engage with the Indian community. Topics of discussion will include cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, investments, technology, defense, and infrastructure.
From November 11 to 13, President Murmu will visit Botswana at the invitation of President Duma Gideon Boko. “This state visit highlights India’s commitment to enhancing its enduring and amicable relations with Botswana,” Dalela remarked.
