Purnia MP Pappu Yadav drew sharp condemnation from religious leaders on Friday, 31 July after he wore saffron attire while staging a protest inside the Parliament complex over the Ram Mandir donation theft case. Several prominent priests and saints described the act as an insult to Sanatan Dharma and called for strict action against those involved.

Priests Denounce the Protest

Sant Satyendra Das Vedanti said that opposition leaders, including those from the Samajwadi Party and figures like Pappu Yadav from Bihar, had 'worked to defame society and Sanatan culture.' He appealed to the Union government to take 'the strictest possible action' against such individuals, warning that inaction would only embolden them further.

Swami Sachchidanand Maharaj of Chitragupt Peethadhishwar called the incident 'a matter of great shame,' saying it 'will never be tolerated' that a sitting MP would attempt to insult the saffron attire in such a manner inside India's Parliament. 'What Pappu Yadav did today is extremely shameful. Nothing could be more disgraceful for the country. He has tried to mock Sanatan, Sanatanis, and the saffron attire,' he said.

Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti Weighs In

Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, General Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, alleged that the Parliament complex had been 'misused specifically by the Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and their favoured MP.' He referred to Pappu Yadav as a 'convicted criminal' who appeared in saffron robes to allegedly insult Sanatan Dharma. On the Ram Mandir issue itself, Saraswati noted that the seers of Ayodhya had already responded and that the matter of those who committed theft would be jointly determined by the SIT and the Supreme Court. The Samiti, he declared, would 'absolutely not tolerate' any attempt to use the episode as a pretext to disparage Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

Ayodhya Temple Mahant's Remarks

Mahant Raju Das of Hanumangarhi Temple in Ayodhya questioned whether elected Members of Parliament should conduct themselves in such a manner in a democracy. He alleged that during the protest, Samajwadi Party leaders and others were 'allegedly grabbing collars and pulling saints dressed in saffron robes.' Das also drew a pointed comparison, asking whether anyone had ever donned a cleric's skullcap and behaved similarly toward Islam.

Other Religious Voices

Ramadal Trust President Kalki Ram said that saffron 'is not merely a colour' but represents 'Agni Vesh' in Sanatan Dharma, and that those who wear it as impostors 'invite their own downfall.' Mahamandaleshwar Vishnu Das Maharaj questioned why Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad and others were present at the protest, adding that 'such people should be welcomed with shoes and slippers.'

This comes amid ongoing political controversy over the Ram Mandir donation theft case, with opposition parties pressing the government for accountability. The incident has widened the fault lines between religious bodies and opposition leaders, with the matter now likely to reverberate beyond Parliament into the broader debate over religious symbolism in Indian politics.
