Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 11 (NationPress) Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), affiliated with the CPI(M), and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) conducted separate protests on Sunday against Rahul Mamkootathil, the expelled Congress MLA, who has been apprehended in relation to a rape case.
The demonstrations began when police transported the detained MLA, previously the Youth Congress Kerala president, to the Pathanamthitta district general hospital for a required medical examination after his questioning.
As the police vehicle approached the hospital premises, youth activists encircled it, chanting slogans and hurling accusations at the MLA.
Protesters expressed their outrage, questioning why an individual facing multiple severe criminal charges was still receiving political support and protection.
“This is not the first or second case, but the third one. Why is such a person being shielded?” they shouted, demanding stringent legal action.
The situation quickly escalated, necessitating a heavy police presence.
Despite the intense chanting, officers managed to escort Rahul Mamkootathil from the police vehicle into the hospital under strict protection.
Minor skirmishes reportedly occurred between police and protesters as officials worked to clear the area and avert further disturbances.
Rahul Mamkootathil was dramatically arrested in connection with what police claim is the third rape case against him. He was apprehended at a hotel in Palakkad around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Following his detention, he was taken to the Pathanamthitta AR Camp for questioning. The interrogation was led by a Special Investigation Team under DIG G. Poonguzhali.
As per police sources, the case originates from an email complaint filed by a woman from Pathanamthitta district. The complainant has made serious allegations against the MLA, including severe sexual assault, coerced abortion, and prolonged financial exploitation.
Authorities have stated that the accusations are grave and that the investigation is proceeding with the utmost care, considering the case's sensitivity and the public attention it has attracted.
The arrest and the ensuing protests have heightened political tension in the district, with increasing calls for accountability and a fair investigation. Officials have pledged that law and order will be upheld and that anyone found culpable will face consequences, regardless of their political position.
