Chandigarh, April 27 (NationPress) Punjab's Finance and Excise Minister Harpal Cheema revealed a significant achievement in the state’s ongoing “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (war against addiction) initiative, having intercepted 2,240 litres of stolen extra neutral alcohol (ENA), thus preventing a potential hooch disaster.
Cheema noted the campaign's effectiveness in filing 4,745 NDPS cases, detaining 7,536 individuals, and razing the illegal assets of 71 smugglers.
The minister, also leading the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ Cabinet Sub-Committee, provided details of the operation during a press briefing.
“Based on reliable intelligence, a collaborative team from the Excise Department and Sangrur police intercepted a vehicle on the Sangrur-Dirba Highway carrying about 200 litres of illegal ethanol. The driver, Shaan Mohd., was taken into custody,” Cheema stated.
“Further inquiries unveiled a hidden storage site, leading to the recovery of 34 drums, each holding 60 litres, summing up to 2,040 litres of ENA. Another suspect, Armaan Mohd, was also arrested during the operation,” he added.
Stressing the significance of this seizure, the minister remarked that this operation has effectively averted a possible hooch catastrophe, as this ENA could have been transformed into nearly 10,000 bottles of illicit liquor. He confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and nab all parties involved in the operation, with stringent legal measures to be enforced.
Discussing the advancements made under the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign, Cheema highlighted that to date, 4,745 NDPS cases have been processed, 7,536 individuals arrested, and the illicit properties of 71 smugglers destroyed. Furthermore, substantial amounts of drugs have been seized, including 301 kg of heroin, 9,969 kg of poppy husk, 154 kg of opium, 96 kg of ganja, and 21,84,276 tablets or capsules of prohibited drugs.
The minister commended the collaborative efforts between the state’s Excise and Police departments in combating the smuggling of illicit liquor. Recognizing the campaign's success is heavily reliant on public support, he expressed his gratitude to residents for their cooperation in the fight against drugs and the illicit liquor trade.
