New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Punjab FC has officially appointed Nikhil Prabhu as the captain for the 134th edition of the Durand Cup. The Shers are set to kick off their campaign against I-League 3 team Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC this Sunday in Kokrajhar.
Nikhil joined the team at the beginning of the 2023-24 season and has established himself as a key player ever since. He made his debut for Punjab FC in the 2023 Durand Cup against Mohun Bagan Super Giant and has since accumulated 41 appearances across all competitions.
Last season, he captained the squad in a match against Kerala Blasters when the regular captain Luka Majcen was unavailable.
In May, Nikhil received a call-up to the national team for a friendly match against Thailand, where he made his debut as a substitute in the 67th minute. He was also selected for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong.
The current Punjab Durand Cup squad features new additions such as Muhammed Uvais and Bijoy Varghese, along with Rakesh Meitei, who is returning for another season after his loan from Kerala Blasters. Ranjeet Pandre also makes a comeback after spending last season on loan at Gokulam Kerala FC.
