Chandigarh, Nov 14 (NationPress) The Punjab Police have successfully dismantled an interstate counterfeit currency operation, apprehending two suspects from Dera Bassi and confiscating Rs 9.99 crore in fake and demonetised currency, as reported by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Friday.
The arrested individuals have been named as Sachin and Gurdeep, both hailing from Kurukshetra in Haryana.
The seized items comprise Rs 11,05,000 in genuine old currency and Rs 9.88 crore in counterfeit notes. Additionally, the police have seized their white Scorpio-N vehicle, which they were using.
DGP Yadav indicated that initial investigations showed that the suspects employed a deceptive tactic, placing authentic notes atop bundles while concealing counterfeit notes underneath to deceive unsuspecting victims. They are believed to be connected to numerous fraud and counterfeit cases spanning Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
The DGP mentioned that technical analysis and continued questioning are in progress to uncover the broader network and identify any additional accomplices involved in this operation.
Providing operational insights, Senior Superintendent of Police (SAS Nagar) Harmandeep mentioned that a tip-off had been received about the movements of two individuals tied to the interstate counterfeit currency network.
Specialized teams were formed under the guidance of Superintendent of Police (Rural) Manpreet Singh and DSP (Dera Bassi) Bikramjit Singh Brar.
In a prompt response, the teams, led by SHO (Dera Bassi) Sumit Mor and anti-narcotics cell in-charge Malkeet Singh, established a special checkpoint near PWD Rest House on the Ghaggar Bridge along the old Ambala-Kalka highway, intercepting the suspects and recovering the counterfeit and demonetised currency from them.
The SSP added that the investigation has revealed that the arrested individuals have defrauded many in Punjab and neighboring states and have prior criminal histories related to fraud and counterfeit currency.
Further arrests and recoveries are anticipated in the days ahead as the investigation continues.
