Guwahati, July 23 (NationPress) A tragic incident has unfolded in Assam's Bongaigaon district, where a young female engineer associated with the Public Works Department (PWD) has reportedly taken her own life. The victim, known as Joshita Das, served as a Junior Engineer in the PWD – Housing division and had been stationed in the district for almost a year.
Authorities have apprehended two officials following a formal complaint lodged after Das's death, according to police reports released on Wednesday.
Joshita Das was discovered hanging in her rented accommodation at Barpara on Monday.
A suicide note found at the scene has caused a stir in the engineering and administrative sectors.
In her note, she implicated two senior PWD officials, former Executive Engineer Dinesh Sharma Medhi and former SDO Aminul Islam, accusing them of inflicting severe mental distress and coercion.
Das expressed in her note that she felt intense pressure to authorize a contractor's bill concerning the construction of a stadium at Borsojgaon within the Gossaigaon Assembly constituency, a project managed by M/s Achetic Creations.
She alleged that, despite the project lacking essential architectural plans and adequate documentation, the two officials persistently urged her to approve the payment.
Furthermore, she claimed that the contractor, Rudra Pathak, failed to appoint a site engineer, placing the burden of on-site implementation solely on her shoulders.
Additionally, she charged architect Debajit Sarma with submitting a flawed estimate filled with inconsistencies.
Her repeated requests for help, she lamented, were disregarded. Although Medhi and Islam had recently been reassigned—Medhi to Nalbari NH Division and Islam to the Chief Engineer's Office—Joshita alleged they continued to pressure her from their new positions.
In the wake of Joshita Das's death, her mother lodged an FIR alleging ongoing harassment.
Both officials have been detained, with the suicide note serving as crucial evidence in the active investigation.
Authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry into this grave matter, and Joshita's remains have been sent for a post-mortem examination.
