New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to travel to Chandigarh on Tuesday to meet the family of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who reportedly took his own life on October 7. The Congress party announced Gandhi’s visit on Monday, indicating he will arrive at approximately 5:30 p.m. to extend his condolences and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family.
Puran Kumar, a 2010-batch IPS officer stationed in Haryana, was discovered deceased at his official residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. Initial reports suggest he died by suicide using his service revolver. The situation escalated when a suicide note allegedly penned by Kumar implicated 14 officials, accusing them of mental harassment and discriminatory practices based on caste.
Following the incident, on October 9, Chandigarh Police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at 10:40 PM against all 14 individuals named in the note. The accused comprise Haryana’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujit Kapoor and Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarnia. Charges have been placed under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment to suicide) and Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(5) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Despite the FIR, the family of the deceased officer has expressed significant concern regarding the investigation, choosing to withhold consent for the postmortem examination due to a lack of trust in both the Chandigarh Police and the Haryana Government. Consequently, the officer’s body has remained in the mortuary since October 7.
Amneet P. Kumar, the officer's wife and a senior IAS officer, met with several senior political figures on Monday. However, she opted not to engage with various state government representatives, reportedly rejecting attempts she viewed as political pacification.
The Congress party has lambasted the BJP-led Haryana Government, labeling the incident a manifestation of the state's administrative and law enforcement failures.
