Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 2 (NationPress) Senior Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, participated in a joint assembly of the Political Affairs Committees (PACs) representing the Congress party in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Monday.
Gandhi, who arrived on Monday morning for a one-day visit to Telangana, took part in the meeting held at SAP Arts and Science College in Vikarabad.
Upon landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) alongside AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, he proceeded to Vikarabad.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy welcomed Rahul Gandhi at the airport and accompanied him to the meeting venue.
During his visit to Vikarabad, he was also greeted by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Mahesh Kumar Goud, and Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Y.S. Sharmila.
Following the joint PAC meeting, Rahul Gandhi moved to Haritha Resort at Anantagiri Hills to engage in a training camp for newly-appointed District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents from both states.
The DCC presidents are participating in a comprehensive 10-day training program aimed at enhancing the party's grassroots presence.
In his address at the concluding session, Rahul Gandhi is expected to offer guidance on strategies to fortify the organization.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, alongside TPCC leaders and senior members, is anticipated to discuss significant party matters with Rahul Gandhi, including the upcoming elections for two Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana.
Discussions may include a list of potential candidates for the Rajya Sabha nominations, with several senior leaders vying for these positions. Notable contenders include veteran Congress figure Shyam Mohan Anantula, Chief Minister’s advisor Vem Narender Reddy, former Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao, G Chinna Reddy (Chairman, Telangana State Planning Board), former MP Madhu Yaskhi Goud, and M Kodanda Reddy (Chairman, Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission).
The deadline for filing nominations is March 5, with elections set for March 16.
The terms of the sitting members, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and K.R. Suresh Reddy, will conclude on April 9, necessitating these elections.
Suresh Reddy currently serves as the BRS Parliamentary Party leader, while Singhvi was elected in 2024 as a Congress candidate, replacing K. Keshava Rao after his transition to the Congress party.
With a stronghold of 66 MLAs in the 119-member Assembly, backed by its ally CPI (one MLA) and friendly party AIMIM (seven MLAs), the Congress party is in a favorable position to secure both seats.
The Congress leadership is reportedly eager to renominate Singhvi for another term.
A formal announcement regarding the candidates is anticipated on March 4.
