Bairabi-Sairang rail line and Kaladan project to transform Mizoram: Governor V.K. Singh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retd) on Saturday, 16 August 2025, described the recently inaugurated Bairabi-Sairang railway line, its proposed southward extension to Zorinpui, and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project as potential game-changers for the state's connectivity, trade, and economic future. Speaking at a function in Aizawl, Singh called on Mizoram to prepare itself to fully capitalise on these transformative infrastructure developments.
The Railway Line and Its Planned Extension
The 51.38-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang section — connecting a point near southern Assam to a locality near Aizawl — was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Aizawl on 13 September 2025, according to officials. The project is now set to be extended further southward by over 200 km to Zorinpui in southern Mizoram.
This extension will serve as a critical link to the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which in turn connects to Paletwa and the Sittwe Port in Myanmar. Together, the corridor could open an alternative trade and transit route for India's landlocked northeastern states.
Governor's Call for Preparedness
Addressing the Independence Day function, Governor Singh stressed that infrastructure alone is insufficient without corresponding preparation at the community and institutional level. He emphasised the need for clean towns, trained hospitality personnel, homestays, and quality local products to harness the state's tourism potential.
'Our beautiful landscapes, rich culture, music, food and warm hospitality have enormous potential to attract tourists. For this we must prepare better facilities, clean and attractive towns, trained hospitality personnel, guides, homestays and quality local products,' Singh said.
He also underlined the importance of building market linkages for Mizoram's agricultural produce, processed foods, handicrafts, and handloom products. 'This is an ecosystem that we need to create,' he added.
Push for Youth to Compete Nationally and Globally
General Singh urged Mizo youth to shed insularity and prepare to compete at the national and global level. He specifically called for greater participation in Civil Services, IITs, IIMs, medical institutions, defence services, and emerging professions.
'Our youth must have the confidence to go out, compete and succeed and bring their knowledge and experience back to Mizoram,' he said. At the same time, he cautioned that development must not erode what makes the state distinctive — its culture, community spirit, environment, and social values.
Independence Day Reflections and Mizo Freedom Fighters
Referring to the 80th Independence Day celebrations on 15 August 2025, the Governor paid tribute to freedom fighters whose sacrifices made India's independence possible. He specifically highlighted the contributions of Mizo leaders and heroes including Lalnu Ropuiliani, Nikuala, Lianphunga Sailo, Zakapa, and Khuangchera.
The event featured cultural performances by students of Eklavya Model Residential School, Tlangnuam and Nuehof English Medium School in Aizawl, alongside local artists. Among the distinguished guests were Chief Minister Lalduhoma, former Chief Ministers Lal Thanhawla and Zoramthanga, and state Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama.
As the Bairabi-Sairang extension and Kaladan corridor move closer to realisation, Mizoram's ability to translate infrastructure into lasting economic opportunity will depend on how swiftly the state builds the institutional and human capacity to match.
