Transformative Impact of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line on Mizoram
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aizawl, March 27 (NationPress) The Governor of Mizoram, General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd), referred to the newly inaugurated Bairabi-Sairang railway line stretching 51.38 km as a pivotal development for the state's mountainous regions.
This railway line, inaugurated by PM Modi on September 13, 2025, is poised to greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic progress within the hilly landscapes of Mizoram. The Governor noted in a press interaction that plans are in place to extend the line over 200 km further south to Zorinpui in southern Mizoram.
This extension will connect with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, ultimately linking to Paletwa and the Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
Such improvements in connectivity are anticipated to bring about significant socio-economic transformation not just for Mizoram but also for the entire Northeast region and the nation as a whole.
Addressing border security, General Singh (Retd) acknowledged Mizoram's vulnerability to drug trafficking due to its proximity to international borders.
He confirmed that the government is vigilant and dedicated to curbing illegal cross-border activities, including trafficking and other illicit dealings.
The Governor emphasized that Mizoram, as a predominantly tribal and Christian-majority state, benefits from the positive influence and engagement of the Church, the Young Mizo Association, and various NGOs in maintaining social order and unity.
He highlighted Mizoram's strategic significance, despite its relatively small population and compact geography. The state is uniquely situated at the tri-junction of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, positioning it as a critical component of India's Act East Policy.
He also underscored the friendly relations Mizoram shares with neighboring countries, contributing to a largely peaceful border environment with minimal major incidents.
Reflecting on the state's past, he recounted that although Mizoram faced unrest previously, the historic Mizoram Peace Accord of 1986 marked the onset of lasting peace and stability.
He characterized Mizoram as one of India's most literate states, recognized as the country's first fully literate state, and often referred to as the “Ginger Capital of India.”
The Governor also remarked on the rapid development across various sectors within the state.
