Amaravati, Sep 19 (NationPress) A prominent member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, Marri Rajasekhar, who left the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in March, has confirmed his decision to join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Rajasekhar is scheduled to be officially welcomed into the TDP by party president and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu this Friday evening.
In a dramatic move, Rajasekhar announced his resignation from both the YSRCP and the Legislative Council on the last day of the previous legislative session in March.
He promptly requested the Council Chairman Koyye Moshenu Raju to accept his resignation without delay. However, his departure from the Council remains unprocessed.
Elected to the Legislative Council via the MLA quota in 2023, Rajasekhar has four years remaining in his term.
He is the fifth MLC to sever ties with YSRCP following the party's loss of power to the TDP-led NDA last year.
Other MLCs who have exited YSRCP include Jayamangala Venkataramana, Pothula Sunitha, Balli Kalyan Chakravarthy, and Karri Padmashree.
Hailing from Guntur district, Rajasekhar first entered the Assembly as an independent candidate from Chilakaluripet in 2004, narrowly defeating TDP’s Prattipati Pulla Rao by just 212 votes. He later joined the Congress party but faced defeat against Pulla Rao in the 2009 elections. In the 2014 Assembly elections, Rajasekhar ran as a YSRCP candidate but was again defeated by Pulla Rao.
In 2019, the YSRCP nominated Vidadala Rajani from the Chilakaluripet constituency, who won with a significant majority and was appointed as a minister in the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Cabinet.
However, the YSRCP transferred Rajani to the Guntur West constituency for the 2024 elections, which she lost.
Rajasekhar expressed dissatisfaction over the appointment of former Minister Vidadala Rajani as the party’s in-charge for Chilakaluripet, particularly after her electoral defeat last year.
Upon his departure from YSRCP, he claimed he had not received adequate recognition within the party and accused party president Jagan Mohan Reddy of failing to fulfill his commitments.
