The Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has ended a two-and-a-half-year organisational vacuum by appointing veteran RSS-BJP organiser Ajaey Kumar as State General Secretary (Organisation), a move timed to shore up the party's machinery ahead of approaching local body elections. The post had been lying vacant since January 2024, when the previous incumbent, Chandrashekhar, was transferred to Telangana after nearly seven years in Rajasthan.

Why the Post Matters

Within the BJP's internal hierarchy, the State General Secretary (Organisation) is considered the structural backbone of the party unit. The role functions as the critical link between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the party leadership, elected representatives, and ground-level workers. Responsibilities span organisational expansion, cadre training, election management, and internal conflict resolution.

Notably, in the absence of a full-time occupant over the past two-plus years, several party leaders privately acknowledged that communication gaps had widened between the state government, party leadership, and grassroots workers — a structural weakness the central leadership is now moving to correct.

Who Is Ajaey Kumar

Originally from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Ajaey Kumar brings close to three decades of organisational experience to the role. He began his public life in 1997 as an RSS Pracharak in Srinagar (Garhwal) before ascending through several key Sangh positions. He later served as BJP Regional General Secretary (Organisation) for Western Uttar Pradesh, and was appointed BJP State General Secretary (Organisation) in Uttarakhand in 2019.

Party leaders credit his Uttarakhand tenure with measurable improvements in membership campaigns, booth management, organisational discipline, and government-organisation coordination — credentials that made him a natural choice for a Rajasthan unit in need of consolidation.

Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore welcomed the appointment, describing Kumar as a seasoned organiser capable of injecting fresh energy into the state unit. Rathore said Kumar's extensive experience, dedication to party workers, and leadership capabilities would bring 'new energy and strength' to the Rajasthan BJP organisation, adding that his ability to connect with workers and build strong structures made him ideally suited for the state.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the appointment a recognition of Kumar's organisational abilities and leadership skills. He said the decision reflected the BJP leadership's faith in experienced organisers who could provide 'fresh direction and renewed energy,' and expressed confidence that under Kumar's guidance, the Rajasthan BJP would become 'more robust, dynamic, and people-centric.'

Political Context and the Road Ahead

Kumar's appointment closes the chapter on Chandrashekhar's long tenure — a period that witnessed the BJP's defeat in the 2018 Assembly elections, its clean sweep of all 25 Lok Sabha seats in 2019, and its return to power in the 2023 Assembly elections. According to party sources, the post was expected to be filled before the 2023 polls but was delayed; the central leadership has now moved to fill it ahead of local body elections to ensure smoother party management.

With the next Assembly elections still more than two years away, Kumar's immediate priorities will be uniting rival factions, energising the cadre, and reinforcing booth-level structures across Rajasthan.
