Ram Mandir donation row: Devkinandan Thakur backs justice, demands Shankaracharya oversight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Spiritual narrator Devkinandan Thakur on Tuesday, 23 June weighed in on the Ram Mandir donation controversy, asserting that if allegations of financial irregularities at the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust are proven true, both the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver justice. He also renewed his call for the temple's administration to be placed under the guidance of the Shankaracharyas.
What Devkinandan Thakur Said
Speaking to reporters in Dholpur, Thakur said, 'The way these matters are coming to light and the information that is emerging, if it is true, then CM Yogi's government and PM Modi's government will certainly ensure justice. Those who may have committed wrongdoing in the name of Lord Ram, if they have indeed done so, will be exposed once the investigation is completed.'
Thakur was careful to frame his remarks conditionally, consistently using 'if' — a notable hedge that stops short of directly accusing any individual or body of wrongdoing.
Demand for Sanatan Board and Shankaracharya Oversight
Thakur reiterated a demand he had first raised during the Kumbh Mela — the formation of a Sanatan Board to oversee Hindu temple affairs. 'There should not be any government official involved in the management of the Ram Temple,' he said, adding that the temple 'should be administered according to the guidance of the Shankaracharyas.'
He argued that misuse of temple funds would ultimately harm Sanatan Dharma itself, and called for accountability mechanisms to prevent such outcomes. 'People should understand that temple funds must not be misused, and if they are, there should be consequences,' he said.
Supreme Court PIL and CBI-SIT Demand
Thakur's remarks come a day after a fresh Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Supreme Court on Monday, 22 June, seeking registration of an FIR and a court-monitored investigation by a CBI-led Special Investigation Team (SIT) into alleged financial irregularities, missing funds, and mismanagement at the Trust. The petition was filed under Article 32 of the Constitution by advocates Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav, seeking a 'fair, impartial, comprehensive, and time-bound investigation' into donations and funds received for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Yogi Government's Position
The Uttar Pradesh government has already constituted an SIT to probe the alleged embezzlement. On 19 June, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the SIT would 'uncover the truth without any doubt,' and urged devotees not to be swayed by attempts to tarnish the image of the temple or the holy city of Ayodhya.
What Comes Next
With the Supreme Court PIL pending and a state SIT already active, the controversy over alleged financial irregularities at one of India's most prominent religious trusts is set to intensify. The outcome of both proceedings will be closely watched by religious communities, legal observers, and political circles alike.
