Jammu, Nov 24 (NationPress) Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy arrived in Jammu on Monday to oversee the inaugural auction of limestone mineral blocks, marking a pivotal initiative for the development of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Reddy, alongside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, attended the event at the convention centre located on Canal Road in Jammu.
Officials characterize this auction as a strong representation of the collaboration between the Centre and the State, highlighting its importance for J&K's development.
“This milestone signifies a crucial advancement in the mining reforms initiated under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR Act) of 2015.
“It is also the first mining block auction conducted in the Union Territory following the law's enactment, indicating a transition towards transparency, competition, and sustainable development in the mineral sector.
“Seven limestone blocks have been earmarked, covering around 314 hectares across the districts of Anantnag, Rajouri, and Poonch.
“These deposits are classified under G3 (Prospecting) and G4 (Reconnaissance) stages of mineral exploration as per the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), possessing significant potential for high-quality limestone essential for cement production, construction, and various industrial uses.
“The auction will proceed under subsections (4) and (5) of Section 11 of the MMDR Act, allowing the Central Government to assist when State or Union Territory authorities encounter procedural challenges.
“This methodology embodies the principles of cooperative federalism, facilitating timely implementation and reform execution.
“The Ministry of Mines is dedicated to executing a transparent, technology-driven, and competitive auction process, emphasizing sustainable mining aligned with national environmental standards.
“This initiative is anticipated to foster job creation, revenue growth, industrial expansion, and new economic prospects for local communities, propelling Jammu and Kashmir’s development forward and contributing to the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047,” officials noted.
