New Delhi, Nov 23 (NationPress) The inaugural auction of limestone mineral blocks in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is set to commence in Jammu on Monday, as announced by the Ministry of Mines.
This significant event will be presided over by G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister of Coal and Mines, alongside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary. Their participation underlines the strong collaboration between the Centre and the state, highlighting the strategic relevance of this initiative for the region.
This event represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing mining reforms initiated under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR Act) of 2015.
According to the Ministry, "This is the first mining block auction in the Union Territory following these reforms, indicating a transition towards transparency, competitiveness, and sustainable development in the mineral sector."
Seven limestone blocks have been earmarked across the districts of Anantnag, Rajouri, and Poonch, covering an area of approximately 314 hectares.
These deposits, classified under UNFC G3 and G4 exploration stages, are believed to contain high-quality limestone that is crucial for cement production, construction, and various industrial uses.
The auction will adhere to Subsections (4) and (5) of Section 11 of the MMDR Act, allowing the Central government to manage the process when state or Union Territory administrations encounter procedural challenges.
This methodology embodies the principles of cooperative federalism, ensuring prompt implementation and reform execution.
The Ministry of Mines is dedicated to conducting a transparent, technology-driven, and competitive auction process, with a strong emphasis on sustainable mining that aligns with national environmental standards.
"This initiative is anticipated to foster job creation, enhance revenue, spur industrial growth, and open new economic avenues for local communities—propelling Jammu and Kashmir’s development and contributing to the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047," the Ministry stated.
