Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Dec 18 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, on Thursday challenged his predecessor and the BRS leader, K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), to engage in a debate regarding the perceived injustice faced by Telangana in the distribution and use of Krishna and Godavari waters throughout the decade-long governance of BRS.
He emphasized that the government is prepared to convene a special Assembly session focused on water-sharing concerns and to present proof demonstrating how Telangana has been deprived of its legitimate water share during the BRS's tenure.
Reddy accused the BRS and KCR of having betrayed Telangana regarding river water matters over the past ten years, stating it is even worse than the situation during the time of united Andhra Pradesh.
During a press briefing, he issued a challenge to substantiate his claims with evidence.
Noting that KCR is now less active in political affairs, Reddy urged KCR to formally address him as the opposition leader and propose a debate on river water topics.
“We are ready to hold a special session to discuss who has done injustice to Telangana concerning the Krishna and Godavari waters,” he stated.
CM Reddy's remarks come in response to KCR's reported intentions to initiate a mass movement centered on river water allocation and irrigation initiatives. The BRS chief has organized a meeting for December 19 with the party's legislative wing and state executive to plan an agitation strategy.
The Chief Minister further mentioned that the government is willing to deliberate on the 42 percent reservation for backward classes in the Assembly and advance from there.
He also addressed modifications to the rural employment scheme via a new act, asserting that the ruling BJP at the center is conspiring to undermine this crucial initiative.
Reddy expressed confidence that the Congress party would maintain its position in the upcoming Assembly elections, aiming for a two-thirds majority.
Regarding the recently concluded Gram Panchayat elections, the CM revealed that the Congress party secured victory in 7,527 out of 12,702 panchayats, with Congress rebels winning in 808.
This means that Congress and its rebel candidates together triumphed in 8,335 Gram Panchayats, accounting for 66 percent of the seats, while the BRS and BJP collectively obtained 33 percent, with Communist parties winning one percent.
According to his analysis of the Gram Panchayat election results, Congress emerged victorious in 87 out of 94 Assembly constituencies, with BRS leading in six seats and BJP in one.
He attributed the Congress success to the effectiveness of the “people’s government” and highlighted the support received by Congress in recent byelections in Jubilee Hills and Secunderabad Cantonment.
CM Reddy affirmed that the Panchayat elections were conducted impartially, without interference from any leader, MLA, or minister attempting to sway the outcomes through their positions.
“The welfare initiatives, including the distribution of fine rice, bonuses for Jowar crops, subsidized cooking gas cylinders at Rs 500, the Indiramma housing scheme, 200 units of free electricity, interest-free loans for women’s self-help groups, implementation of SC categorization, caste census, and other programs, yielded favorable results in the panchayat elections,” he noted.
He remarked that alongside the six guarantees, the Congress government has afforded freedom to the populace as the seventh guarantee.
