The Ministry of Railways stated that this initiative is designed to strike a balance between affordability for passengers and the sustainability of operations.
The fare adjustments have been implemented in a structured manner for Ordinary Non-AC (non-suburban) services, which include Second Class Ordinary, Sleeper Class Ordinary, and First Class Ordinary.
For journeys extending up to 215 km, the fares for Second Class Ordinary will remain intact, ensuring that short-distance and daily commuters remain unaffected.
For travel distances ranging from 216 km to 750 km, fares will rise by Rs 5; for distances of 751 km to 1,250 km, they will increase by Rs 10; for those between 1,251 km and 1,750 km, the increase will be Rs 15; and for journeys from 1,751 km to 2,250 km, there will be a rise of Rs 20.
The ministry clarified that suburban services and season tickets, including both suburban and non-suburban routes, remain unchanged. Mail and Express trains will see a slight fare adjustment of 2 paise per kilometer across both non-AC and AC classes, which encompasses Sleeper, First Class, AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and AC First Class.
An example provided indicates that for a 500 km non-AC Mail or Express journey, the fare will increase by approximately Rs 10.
The present basic fares for major train services, which include Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Tejas, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, and ordinary non-suburban services (excluding AC MEMU/DEMU, where applicable), have also been adjusted in accordance with the approved increases.
Reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and other ancillary charges will remain unchanged, while the applicability of GST will not be affected. The revised fares will only apply to tickets booked on or after December 26, 2025, and tickets purchased prior will not incur extra charges. The ministry noted that station fare lists will be updated to reflect these new rates.
