Key Takeaways
Kabul, February 24 (NationPress) - The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially named Richard Pybus as the new head coach for the Afghanistan men's national cricket team as of Tuesday. He takes over from Jonathan Trott, who resigned from his position following the conclusion of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
"The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is delighted to introduce Richard Pybus as the Head Coach of the Afghanistan National Team. He will be joining the AfghanAtalan in preparation for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka in March," stated the board in a press release.
With extensive coaching expertise, Pybus is a three-time ICC Cricket World Cup-winning head coach and has significantly contributed to establishing high-performance frameworks within various teams.
He previously held the roles of Head Coach, Director of Cricket, and Head of High Performance for the West Indies cricket team from 2013 to 2019. Under his leadership, the West Indies made history in 2016 by securing a remarkable treble, with their men's, women's, and U-19 teams all claiming ICC world titles within the same year.
Pybus also coached the Pakistan cricket team, leading them to the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup final, where they were runners-up to Australia. Additionally, he has been part of the senior management of the Bangladesh cricket team and achieved considerable success in South African domestic and franchise cricket, amassing nine championship titles—a national record. He has been honored twice as the South African Cricket Coach of the Year.
Noted for his ability to nurture talent, Pybus has collaborated closely with prominent players such as Mohammad Rizwan, Faf du Plessis, and Dale Steyn.
In related news, the Afghanistan cricket team encountered a disappointing exit in the group stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, managing to secure only two victories out of four matches in the initial round, ultimately losing to New Zealand and South Africa, the latter advancing to the Super 8s stage from the group.
