New Delhi, June 22 (NationPress) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is captivated by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's bold batting performance in the first innings of the opening Test against England, praising his remarkable consistency at the No. 5 position.
The vice-captain of India struck his seventh Test century and third in England, marking the highest number of centuries by any visiting wicketkeeper. He now surpasses MS Dhoni to hold the record for the most Test hundreds as a wicketkeeper for India, with a total of seven.
"Firstly, he's extraordinary. I noticed that on the first day as well. What I saw was impressive. He stands out from the crowd. He plays according to his own rules. Sometimes, he’ll consider the statistics; other times, he’ll follow his instincts. That’s Rishabh Pant for me," Shastri expressed in a video released by the BCCI.
"There's a complete package there. It can be incredibly perilous in Test matches. Since he took the No. 5 spot, he has been remarkably consistent," he added.
The 27-year-old delivered a commanding innings of 134 runs and was pivotal in a significant 209-run partnership with skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 147 on his debut as Test captain, achieving his highest score in the format.
The former all-rounder further emphasized the influence of Pant's presence on the team and his ability to change the dynamics of any match situation.
"If the team is at thirty for three, for instance, you might consider sending someone else. However, with him, his aggressive approach can alter the game's direction. It allows others to capitalize on the situation.
"Alternatively, if he has a solid platform like today, coming in after lunch with a score exceeding 100, he can truly make the opposition pay due to his range of shots and fearlessness.
"I mean, how many players would hit shots down the ground on the second ball? It's a clear message to the opponents: I'm here to attack, not just to play defensively," he stated.
"I’m genuinely thrilled for him because considering where he was after that accident, to score a century in the first Test of the series is remarkable – he had one against Bangladesh, but this one is exceptional. During the first Test of the series, as vice-captain, he batted alongside his captain to forge that partnership. It was fabulous," Shastri added.
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik also admired Pant's performance in the middle, which helped India reach 471 in the first innings.
"I love watching Rishabh Pant because of the excitement he brings. His unpredictable and thrilling shots keep you on the edge of your seat. Every time he plays, you never know what to expect. That’s the essence of captivating Test cricket. He might surprise you with anything. I appreciate that about him.
"He’s willing to take risks and play audacious shots. He’s one of my favorite cricketers to watch in Test cricket because he can challenge any bowler based on his instinct. That’s so natural and pure. It’s a joy to witness his battles," Karthik remarked about Pant.
