Rohini Devi: A Beacon of Women's Empowerment in the Remote Village on the LoC, Thanks to NRLM

Akhnoor (Jammu & Kashmir), Dec 20 (NationPress) A notable achievement of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) in the border village of Pallanwala, located in the Akhnoor district of Jammu and Kashmir, is gaining attention for its ability to improve the living conditions of female residents.
Rohini Devi, a local inhabitant, has become the symbol of women's empowerment in this area, owing to her personal efforts and the backing of the government in promoting start-ups and small enterprises.
Currently, numerous residents like her are achieving financial independence. With the assistance of government programs, these women are establishing small businesses and becoming self-sufficient.
Rohini Devi, hailing from Pallanwala, embarked on a journey of spice production recently. By becoming a member of the Self Help Group (SHGs), she involved other women from the village in this venture.
This initiative has not only boosted her income but has also created job opportunities for her community.
She acquired a spice-making machine with support from the Horticulture Department, which provided a 60 percent subsidy.
Reflecting on her initial challenges, she stated: “I never gave up despite the obstacles. As more women joined me and witnessed the growth of the business, everyone’s motivation soared. Now, we are collectively producing spices and earning a good income. Previously, it was difficult to manage household expenses, but now, through our hard work, we can meet our family needs.”
“Thanks to the horticulture department, women are now gaining independence and enjoying the results of their labor,” she continued.
Another villager remarked: “In the past, our roles were confined to household duties, but now we are also earning an income. We are no longer just caregivers; we are standing on our own feet. All of us are diligently working and generating a healthy monthly income.”
Amit Saraf, an official from the Horticulture Department, mentioned that locals are being inspired to launch new enterprises, and women beneficiaries are receiving technical support and training for their initiatives.
