Moscow, Dec 16 (NationPress) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Europe, labeling it a "quack doctor" for failing to seize chances to address the Ukraine crisis. He expressed positive sentiments regarding recent dialogues with the United States.
In a Monday interview with Iranian media, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's stance that it is essential to tackle the underlying issues of the conflict, such as NATO's expansion eastward, Ukraine's potential membership in NATO, territorial disputes, and necessary security guarantees, according to Xinhua news agency.
Lavrov asserted that Europe has consistently ignored efforts to resolve the crisis, instead using the situation to fortify its own position and impede attempts by the United States and other nations to achieve a fair resolution.
Comparing Europe's methods to those of a "quack doctor," he remarked, "They only prescribe remedies that offer temporary relief. They will never make an accurate diagnosis."
He also highlighted recent interactions with the US as encouraging, indicating that the United States now has a better understanding of Russia's perspective and acknowledges the need for a sustainable resolution instead of a mere temporary ceasefire followed by ongoing arms supplies to Ukraine.
Progress is being made, Lavrov noted, "and we are anticipating the US response concerning US-Ukraine discussions."
In the meantime, US President Donald Trump conveyed cautious optimism that months of conflict might soon come to an end, indicating that negotiations aimed at resolving the Russia–Ukraine war are nearing a breakthrough following extensive discussions with European leaders and Ukrainian officials in Berlin.
Trump informed reporters that he had held “very long and very good talks” with a wide array of European leaders, with the war in Ukraine being a major topic of their discussions.
“We had a very productive conversation just an hour ago with European leaders, many of whom were involved in discussions about the war with Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated. “Our discussions were extensive, and things appear to be progressing positively.”
