Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi led a large-scale Tiranga Yatra through Vadodara on Friday, 14 August, drawing citizens from across the city who marched with the Tricolour in a dual celebration of Independence Day and a campaign against drug abuse among youth. The procession was part of Gujarat's state-wide Har Ghar Tiranga drive, under which more than 1,200 Tiranga Yatras have been planned across the state.

Route and Cultural Programme

The yatra commenced at Navlakhi Ground and wound through Kirti Stambh and Lal Court before concluding at Gandhinagar Gruh. The opening programme at Navlakhi Ground featured patriotic cultural performances, balloon releases, and citizens dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Rabindranath Tagore, drawing applause from participants who gathered to celebrate India's cultural heritage and freedom struggle.

As the procession moved through Vadodara's streets, more residents joined the march carrying the national flag. Sanghavi paid floral tributes at the statues of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi along the route, acknowledging their roles in India's independence movement.

Anti-Drug Message at the Heart of the March

Addressing participants, Sanghavi said: 'The youth were the future and strength of the nation,' and urged them to contribute towards building a drug-free society. He added that 'the government would continue to take strict action against drug mafias and that such elements would not be spared.'

The Brahma Kumaris administered a formal pledge to participants, committing them to stay away from addiction. The event concluded with an aarti of Bharat Mata. The inclusion of the anti-drug pledge alongside Independence Day festivities reflects a broader state strategy of embedding social messaging within patriotic public events.

Participation Across Society

The yatra drew participants from diverse sections of society, including children and Divyang (differently-abled) individuals, with Sanghavi personally interacting with and appreciating their presence. The event was attended by a wide cross-section of elected officials and civic leaders, including Minister of State Manisha Vakil, Whip Balakrishna Shukla, Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi, Mayor Gitaben Makwana, MLAs Chaitanya Desai and Satish Patel, Deputy Mayor Aditya Patel, Standing Committee Chairman Varsha Vyas, Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar, Municipal Commissioner Arun Mahesh Babu, and Collector Anil Dhamelia.

Scale of Gujarat's Har Ghar Tiranga Drive

The Vadodara yatra is one piece of a far larger state-government effort. Gujarat has announced plans for more than 1,200 Tiranga Yatras across the state during the Independence Day period, alongside the display of the national flag at approximately 70 lakh homes. The scale of the campaign signals the ruling administration's intent to use the Independence Day window for both civic outreach and social messaging. With the state's anti-drug drive gaining visibility through such public events, similar yatras are expected to continue in the days ahead.
