CM Sarma Claims Gaurav Gogoi Would Fare Better in Pakistan Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 23 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took a pointed shot at Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress Chief and Lok Sabha MP, asserting that Gogoi would garner more votes if he were to run for elections in Pakistan instead of Assam.
During an election rally in Jalukbari, Sarma alleged that Gogoi's support was more substantial outside of India than within the state itself.
“If Gaurav Gogoi were to contest elections from Pakistan, he would definitely secure a greater number of votes than what he is currently receiving here in Assam. His support base in Pakistan is far stronger than in India,” the Chief Minister stated.
This comment is poised to spark significant political backlash as campaigning for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections intensifies, with both BJP and Congress ramping up their criticisms.
Sarma expressed unwavering confidence in the BJP's electoral prospects, claiming that the party and its allies are on a path to a definitive victory.
He mentioned that the public's response at campaign events throughout various constituencies indicated a robust backing for the ruling coalition.
“In every area, large crowds are gathering. There is no doubt that voters will re-elect the BJP,” he stated.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the level of public engagement this time around was unprecedented, suggesting a significant wave of support for the BJP-led alliance.
He further claimed that, unlike in previous elections, he was not actively soliciting votes, but rather observing that people are willingly coming out to support BJP candidates.
“This time, I am not asking for votes. Citizens are coming out enthusiastically to support BJP candidates,” Sarma noted.
Projecting a strong electoral performance, he stated that the BJP-led coalition could exceed the 100-seat threshold in the Assembly, signifying a comfortable majority.
The elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with the vote counting taking place on May 4.
The BJP has fielded candidates in 90 constituencies, while the remaining seats are allocated to its two allies—Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
