Is Gaurav Gogoi Really Fixated on Pakistan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 26 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticized the state's Congress leadership on Monday, accusing Gaurav Gogoi of being “mentally preoccupied with Pakistan” while trying to target him.
In response to Gogoi's recent comments, the Chief Minister stated to reporters that the opposition leader aimed to depict him as a “hardcore Hindu”, yet failed to offer any solid critique.
“The Congress president in Assam aims to label me as a hardcore Hindu. However, even in his criticism, he can only reference Pakistan and its leaders. His mindset is fixated there,” Sarma remarked.
The Chief Minister claimed that such comparisons reveal the Congress's ideological inadequacy in Assam and their failure to address vital issues related to governance, development, and public welfare.
Sarma's remarks followed Gogoi's assertion that the Chief Minister was striving to divide society along religious lines and questioned his persistent references to Pakistan during political speeches.
Gogoi accused Sarma's politics of being centered on polarization and fear-mongering rather than tackling unemployment, rising prices, and farmers' issues.
In retaliation, Sarma noted that the Congress leadership consistently diverts attention from its shortcomings by introducing external narratives into local political discourse.
“When they lack substantial points regarding Assam's development, they begin to invoke Pakistan. This only highlights the roots of their thought process,” he added.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that his administration's priorities lie in development, law and order, and preserving Assam's cultural identity, asserting that the populace has routinely dismissed the Congress's “confused and aimless politics”.
Political analysts view this exchange as part of the intensifying verbal conflict between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress ahead of significant political events in the state, with references to Pakistan emerging as a continual point of contention in Assam's political discussions.
