New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) A Punjab sarpanch, who was barred from attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi's event at the Red Fort on Independence Day due to carrying the sacred ‘kripan’, received support on Monday from Sikh BJP leader R.P. Singh, who labeled the incident a “violation of constitutional rights.”
The BJP National Spokesperson advocated for Sarpanch Sardar Gurdhyan Singh from village Kalsana (Nabha, Punjab), expressing disappointment that he was prevented from participating in the Independence Day celebration, despite holding a valid official invitation (Letter No. 499 issued by the Government of India).
On Monday, R.P. Singh, a former Delhi MLA, met with Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range), Delhi, to file a formal complaint against ACP Shashi Kant Gaur, who allegedly obstructed the village headman from accessing the seating area.
In his complaint, R.P. Singh emphasized that the Sarpanch was denied entry solely because he carried the Sri Sahib (Kirpan), a revered symbol of Sikh faith that is an integral part of Sikh identity and constitutionally protected under Article 25.
He asserted that this represented a violation of constitutional rights, as confirmed by the Supreme Court in the case of Balwant Singh versus State of Rajasthan (2006), and was both an affront to the Sikh community and a neglect of duty, tarnishing the reputation of the Delhi Police.
During the meeting, Joint CP Madhur Verma communicated with Sarpanch Gurdhyan Singh via video call and expressed regret over the incident.
Verma assured that an investigation will take place regarding this matter. He also invited the Sarpanch for a personal meeting, reaffirming goodwill and respect.
Following his discussion with the Joint CP, R.P. Singh welcomed the response from the Delhi Police leadership while underscoring that stringent directives should be implemented to avert the recurrence of such breaches of constitutional and religious rights of the Sikh community.
