Key Takeaways
Kannur, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, has raised significant questions regarding the alleged assault on Health Minister Veena George at the Kannur railway station, purportedly by members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU). He stated that a preliminary investigation conducted by the Congress revealed no signs of any physical confrontation.“Our initial inquiry indicates that not a single protester came anywhere near the Minister. There were 35 police personnel present and only four KSU activists when she arrived at the railway platform in Kannur. While a protest may have occurred, there was no attack,” Satheesan clarified.
He further mentioned that the party plans to undertake a more thorough investigation and promised that strict measures would be taken if any Congress member is found culpable.
“Do you possess any evidence of an assault? With elections approaching, such incidents can occur,” he pointed out.
This stance from the Congress comes amidst strong accusations from the CPI(M), which labeled the event as a “premeditated attack.”
In response, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hurried to the Kannur District Hospital, where George was placed in the Intensive Care Unit due to injuries sustained to her neck and hand. Medical professionals are closely monitoring her condition.
CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan claimed that the attack was orchestrated with the Congress leadership's awareness, while local leaders expressed it was unprecedented for a female Minister to be attacked in the state.
Protests erupted throughout Kannur as party members condemned the reported incident. Nonetheless, the KSU has refuted the allegations.
The state president, Aloshious Xavier, asserted that activists merely chanted slogans and did not physically confront the Minister, challenging officials to provide recordings if an assault did indeed happen.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph, a Kannur native, supported this viewpoint, asserting that the available footage does not suggest any attack on the Minister.
Social media accounts affiliated with Congress's support organizations took it a step further, sarcastically proposing that George “should receive an award for her performance.”
As both factions take a firm stance and the footage fails to provide decisive clarity, attention is now directed towards the police's role at the station and whether this incident reflects a deeper political conflict in election-bound Kerala.
