New Delhi, Oct 10 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has granted bail to the suspended Jharkhand-cadre IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, who has been incarcerated for over two years regarding a money laundering investigation tied to the alleged Army land scam in Ranchi.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi has approved Ranjan's bail request, stipulating that he must not leave the country without court approval and should fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations.
Ranjan, who belongs to the 2011 IAS batch, was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 4, 2023, under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He has remained in custody since both the special PMLA court and the Jharkhand High Court denied his bail petitions.
The ED has initiated two money laundering cases against him. The first case involves the alleged fraudulent purchase and sale of approximately one acre of land on Cheshire Home Road in Ranchi, for which he had previously received bail from the High Court.
The second case concerns the unlawful transfer of about 4.5 acres of Army-occupied land in Bariatu, Ranchi, for which the Supreme Court has now granted reprieve.
As per the ED, Ranjan, during his time as Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, allegedly played a pivotal role in facilitating the illegal land transfer by misusing his authority and conspiring with land dealers and officials.
The agency asserts that the proceeds from these transactions were laundered through various channels.
In addition to Ranjan, the ED has implicated several others in the case, including businessman Vishnu Agarwal, Revenue Sub-Inspector Bhanu Pratap Prasad, and numerous land dealers who allegedly participated in the fraud.
Ranjan, who has previously held the position of Deputy Commissioner in Ranchi and Koderma, was suspended from service subsequent to his arrest.
Following the Supreme Court's order, Ranjan is poised to be released from jail.
