Severe Cold Wave Hits South Korea as Temperatures Drop Below -10°C

Seoul, Jan 9 (NationPress) The coldest weather of the season has enveloped South Korea as of Thursday, with temperatures dropping below -10 degrees Celsius in Seoul and the northern regions.
As reported by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the lowest temperature recorded in Seoul at 8 a.m. was -10.2 degrees Celsius, with the apparent temperature feeling as cold as -16.7 degrees Celsius.
A cold wave advisory was issued for all of Seoul at 9 p.m. the previous evening, which is triggered when morning lows of -12 degrees Celsius or lower are predicted for two or more consecutive days.
In other areas, the lowest temperatures ranged from -16.9 degrees Celsius at the Daegwallyeong mountain pass in Gangwon Province to -13.6 degrees Celsius in Cheorwon and -13 degrees Celsius in Cheonan.
Further south, temperatures dropped to -6.8 degrees Celsius in Gwangju, -6.1 degrees Celsius in Ulsan, and -4.7 degrees Celsius in Busan.
The KMA noted that some mountainous areas of Gangwon saw temperatures plunge below -20 degrees Celsius, while the central region, particularly the eastern part of North Jeolla Province and the northern inlands of North Gyeongsang Province, experienced temperatures ranging from -15 degrees Celsius to -10 degrees Celsius. The rest of the country recorded temperatures dipping to -5 degrees Celsius.
According to the KMA, many regions have recorded their coldest temperatures of this winter.
The cold weather is anticipated to persist, with Thursday’s daily high expected to be between 3 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius, while most areas will experience subzero temperatures throughout the day.
The South Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces, as well as the mountainous areas of Jeju Island, are expected to see snow for the fourth consecutive day, with snowfall rates reaching up to 5 centimeters per hour at times.
