New Delhi, Nov 7 (NationPress) The National Zoological Park (NZP) is set to welcome back visitors on Saturday, concluding a two-month hiatus prompted by an outbreak of influenza within one of its enclosures, according to an official announcement made on Friday.

The official from the Delhi Zoo noted that standard safety protocols will be implemented following the reopening.

The NZP had been closed since August 30, 2025, after a positive case of the avian influenza virus was detected in a water bird aviary on August 28, as reported by the official.

During the closure, all mandated bio-safety and surveillance protocols established by relevant authorities were adhered to.

Guidelines outlined in chapter 6 of the ‘Action Taken for Preparedness, Control, and Containment of Avian Influenza (Revised 2021)’ issued by the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying were rigorously followed throughout the closure.

Sampling was conducted every 15 days over four cycles, with all samples from the last confirmed case yielding negative results as per the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal.

The Delhi Zoo is home to approximately 1,350 animals representing around 130 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles from both India and beyond.

Among its iconic inhabitants are the Royal Bengal Tiger (including white tigers), Asiatic Lion, Indian Rhinoceros, elephants, jaguars, and various deer species, notably the brow-antlered deer (Sangai).

The zoo's design follows the Carl Hagenbeck method, which incorporates expansive, moated enclosures with natural barriers and lush vegetation, allowing animals to inhabit environments that closely mimic their natural habitats, while providing visitors with unobstructed views.

The park features accessible walking trails for individuals using wheelchairs. Battery-operated vehicles (trolleys) can be rented, catering to elderly visitors or those who prefer not to traverse the extensive grounds. Free wheelchairs are available for physically challenged guests.

In addition to its animal exhibits, the park spans 176 acres and is home to over 200 tree varieties and a diverse range of plant life, serving as a green sanctuary in the bustling city. The zoo also functions as an educational hub, offering guided tours, workshops, and a library to enhance public awareness regarding wildlife conservation and protection efforts.
