Patna, Nov 7 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi engaged with silk weavers in Bhagalpur on Friday, addressing the difficulties confronting the local silk industry.
During this meeting, the weavers informed LoP Rahul Gandhi about the current state of their operations in Bhagalpur, emphasizing that while Bhagalpuri silk competes with contemporary synthetic fabrics, handloom artisans require enhanced governmental support and focused policy measures.
Bhagalpur, renowned as the “Silk City of India,” is celebrated worldwide for its Bhagalpuri or Tassar silk, which is sourced from the cocoons of the silkworm species Antheraea papia.
This time-honored craft is labor-intensive, environmentally friendly, and often termed “peace silk” due to its cruelty-free production methods.
The thriving silk ecosystem not only enriches Bihar's cultural heritage but also significantly contributes to the state's economy, attracting interest from both national and international markets.
Earlier that day, LoP Rahul Gandhi spoke to a large audience in Banka, where he criticized the Modi government for alleged “vote chori.”
At another rally in the Amarpur Assembly constituency in Banka district, he stated, “The people of Bihar will not permit them to steal votes. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have been pilfering votes for years. Previously, we lacked proof of vote theft — now we possess data evidence. This is why I assert there is a stolen government in Haryana.”
LoP Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of favoring large industrialists, asserting that farmers, laborers, weavers, and even makhana cultivators are denied bank loans or debt relief, whereas large corporations secure loans worth crores with waivers.
“Has the BJP government ever forgiven the debts of farmers, laborers, weavers or makhana farmers?” he questioned.
LoP Rahul Gandhi also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah's son, stating, “Amit Shah’s son doesn’t even know how to hold a cricket bat, yet he leads the cricket board — why is that?”
