Amit Shah Questions Mamata Banerjee on SIR Challenges in Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah has raised questions regarding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asking why West Bengal stands out as the only state in the nation where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process faced numerous obstacles, ultimately leading the Supreme Court to mandate judicial intervention. Shah remarked, “The revision was successfully completed in 14 states, including those governed by the opposition. Notably, two other states, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, also completed the SIR despite being ruled by opposition parties.
“In no other state did the revision encounter such significant challenges. What prompted the Supreme Court to call for judicial adjudication specifically in West Bengal? This situation arose because district magistrates there were not executing their duties impartially. Mamata Banerjee needs to clarify why the SIR has become a contentious issue solely in her state,” Shah stated during a media briefing following the release of a 'White Paper' criticizing the Trinamool Congress government, which the BJP has labeled as the “public chargesheet.”
Shah further accused Banerjee of unnecessarily politicizing the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s decisions to transfer and assign bureaucrats and police personnel to other regions.
“The ECI routinely transfers officers nationwide before elections. This is not unprecedented. However, in West Bengal, many officers function under the influence of the ruling party, resulting in a high turnover rate. This time, the level of violence during Ram Navami has diminished due to these officer changes,” he added.
He asserted that the primary motive behind Mamata Banerjee and the ruling Trinamool Congress opposing the SIR was to safeguard illegal infiltrators by keeping their names on the voter rolls, thus enabling the party to continue its rule for another five years.
“This time, however, the aspirations of the Trinamool Congress will remain unfulfilled,” Shah declared.
Additionally, he accused the Chief Minister of feigning victimhood ahead of elections. “Whenever elections approach, Mamata Banerjee either sustains an injury or falls ill. She seeks public sympathy through various ailments. But that tactic will not be effective this time,” Shah remarked.
He also claimed that Banerjee’s assertions about Bengalis facing threats in India are politically motivated. “She is attempting to mislead the public by equating Bangladeshi infiltrators with Bengali-speaking Indians. Those who illegally enter India from Bangladesh also communicate in Bengali. There is no need for concern in this state. However, we are steadfast in identifying infiltrators and expelling them from the country,” he explained.
