Why Did Congress Leader Shakeel Ahmad Resign After Bihar Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Nov 11 (NationPress) In the wake of the Bihar Assembly elections, former Union Minister Dr. Shakeel Ahmad has declared his resignation from the Congress party, emphasizing that he chose to wait until after the voting concluded to prevent any negative impact on the party's electoral performance.
In a heartfelt letter directed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmad expressed that his departure from the party’s primary membership comes with a heavy heart.
“I had made my decision to resign earlier, but I am announcing it today only after the polls have closed because I did not want to send any misleading signals or risk the party losing even a handful of votes due to my actions,” he explained.
Ahmad, who has served as both an MLA and MP five times, clarified that his resignation is rooted in personal conflicts with certain party members, rather than disagreements with the party's core ideology.
“This decision does not imply that I am joining any other political faction or group. I have no plans to do so. Like my ancestors, I hold steadfast faith in the Congress's policies and principles, and I will continue to be a supporter of those values throughout my life. My last vote will also be for the Congress,” he stated.
The seasoned politician reflected on his family’s deep-rooted connection with the Congress, highlighting that his grandfather, Ahmed Ghafoor, was elected as a Congress MLA in 1937, and his father, Shakur Ahmed, served five terms as a Congress MLA between 1952 and 1977.
Ahmad indicated that he had previously communicated to the party, via a letter dated April 16, 2023, his decision not to contest in any future elections, mentioning that his sons, who reside in Canada, also lack any interest in political pursuits.
Expressing optimism for the party’s future, Ahmad remarked, “Due to my health issues, I was unable to campaign, but I sincerely hope that the Congress will secure more seats and that our alliance will establish a robust government.”
He concluded his correspondence by reaffirming that while he may have personal disagreements with some individuals currently in leadership positions within the party, his faith in the Congress’s policies and principles remains steadfast.
