Mumbai, April 16 (NationPress) Reality show contestant and winner, Shiv Thakare, has shared his perspective on the ongoing Marathi language controversy in Maharashtra.

In a candid discussion with IANS, Thakare was prompted to express his views on the recent events where MNS workers pressured individuals to communicate in Marathi.

Thakare remarked to IANS, "I personally believe that one cannot compel others to speak a language through threats or violence. However, it is important to have a willingness to learn the language of the region where you reside and earn your livelihood. Even if I travel abroad, I must rely on translation tools like Google to communicate. Thus, nurturing a willingness to learn is essential."

He emphasized that while the method of coercing others to speak Marathi is inappropriate, the underlying intention is commendable. He stated that knowing Marathi is vital for those living in Mumbai, and he makes an effort to learn local languages whenever he visits other states, even if it’s just a few phrases.

Thakare further expressed, "It’s unacceptable to physically assault someone for not speaking your language. If I were to visit places like Gujarat or Assam, I would strive to learn some basic phrases in their languages to connect with the locals."

Drawing from personal experiences, he shared, "I recently traveled to Bangkok and Cape Town for a shoot, and I took the initiative to learn a few words in their languages. Therefore, while the approach might be flawed, those residing in Mumbai should make an effort to learn Marathi."

Recently, numerous reports have surfaced regarding individuals facing physical abuse for their inability to speak Marathi, sparking a significant language debate in the financial hub of the nation.
