Mumbai, March 6 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated on Thursday that Marathi is the predominant language of Mumbai and Maharashtra, following a request from Shiv Sena-UBT legislator Bhaskar Jadhav regarding remarks made by RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi.
The Chief Minister emphasized that those who hold their mother tongue in high regard should also respect all other languages.
Jadhav remarked: "Recently, the Centre granted Classical Language Status to Marathi. In light of this, I urge the Chief Minister to clarify the government's position on RSS veteran Joshi's comments."
CM Fadnavis responded to the House by stating that he had not yet seen or reviewed Joshi's remarks but assured that he would look into them.
"Marathi is the language of Mumbai and Maharashtra. We will ensure that other languages are not disrespected. Those who honor their mother tongue do not belittle any other language," the Chief Minister declared.
On Wednesday, RSS leader Joshi stated: "There is no necessity for newcomers in Mumbai to learn Marathi. Various languages are spoken here. The local dialect in the Ghatkopar region is Gujarati. Mumbai is linguistically diverse, with many languages in use."
Shiv Sena-UBT legislator Aaditya Thackeray sharply condemned Joshi's statement.
"Every Marathi individual should heed Joshi's words. He has insulted Maharashtra and the Marathi language. The state government has even canceled the proposed Marathi Bhavan at Marine Drive and the gallery in Girgaon, despite the classical status granted to Marathi. This is about time action is taken against Bhayyaji Joshi," Thackeray asserted.
Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut criticized Joshi, questioning: "Who gives him the authority? Would anyone dare to claim that Bengali isn't the language in Kolkata? Or assert that Hindi isn't the language in Lucknow? Or claim that Tamil isn't spoken in Chennai?"
Congress legislator Nana Patole accused the RSS and BJP of distracting from pressing issues like farmers' struggles and employment by fueling language disputes.
"Currently, farmers are facing crop failures in Maharashtra. Can't the RSS propose solutions to the government? Are they not concerned about joblessness in the state? The RSS and BJP divert attention from crucial matters with these debates," Patole commented.
NCP-SP spokesperson Amol Matele also criticized the RSS veteran, stating that attempts to undermine Marathi pride would be firmly opposed.
BJP legislator Ram Kadam downplayed Joshi's comments, asserting: "Joshi is a respected figure. His remarks were taken out of context. Some individuals are exaggerating without grasping the sentiment behind Joshi's words."
"Joshi mentioned that a significant number of Gujarati speakers reside in certain areas of Ghatkopar. Naturally, they converse in Gujarati when together," the BJP legislator explained.
"As long as the sun and moon exist, the language of Mumbai will be Marathi," Ram Kadam concluded.
