Will Mumbai's next mayor be Marathi and Hindu?

Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, confidently stated on Friday that the upcoming mayor of Mumbai will be both Marathi and Hindu, reinforcing his belief in the success of MahaYuti in the forthcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
In response to critics who suggest that the BJP lacks a foothold among the Marathi-speaking populace, Fadnavis labeled these claims as misconceptions during an interview.
“Do not presume that the Marathi vote bank is exclusive to others and not the BJP. If we hadn't garnered support from Marathi voters, we wouldn't have triumphed in three consecutive elections,” he stated.
He asserted that irrespective of opposing claims, the BJP stands as the leading party.
“Our voter base includes both Marathi and non-Marathi individuals,” he remarked.
Fadnavis emphasized that the essence of Mumbai remains intact.
“No one can erase Mumbai's Marathi identity. People may come from various regions, but the city's 'Marathipan' is everlasting,” he expressed.
He also took a jibe at the recently formed alliance between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray.
While humorously claiming “credit” for uniting the brothers—a long-cherished wish of Balasaheb Thackeray—he noted that their alliance has come too late to influence the elections.
He argued that had the brothers united in 2009, the electoral results would have differed significantly. He pointed out that their combined vote share has considerably declined, indicating that the alliance poses minimal threat to the BJP-Shinde coalition.
He suggested that merging their bases has resulted in more confusion among their grassroots workers rather than strengthening their campaign.
Highlighting the city’s cultural heritage, CM Fadnavis acknowledged that while the workforce demographics in Mumbai have transformed over the years, its traditions remain steadfast.
“The culture of Mumbai, particularly its traditional Ganeshotsav, must be safeguarded. We will ensure that the city's heritage and direction remain intact,” he asserted.
He firmly stated that the next mayor will be from MahaYuti.
“He will be Hindu, and he will be Marathi,” the Chief Minister reiterated.
The upcoming elections showcase a revamped political landscape.
In a significant turn of events, estranged brothers Raj Thackeray (MNS) and Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena - UBT) have allied, supported by Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
Conversely, the ruling MahaYuti comprises the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP is contesting independently. Additionally, the Congress has partnered with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).
